• Federal Grant Received for Equipment

  August 8, 2008: Chief Redwine announced today that WRCVFD has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for 2008. This grant will be in the amount of $45,377.00 and is to be used for much-needed equipment. The federal share is $43,109.00 and the WRCVFD cost share amount will be $2,268.00.

  The equipment to be purchased with these funds includes: turnout gear, fire hose, firefighting nozzles, portable deluge monitors, fire pagers, and training media and equipment.

  WRCVFD has not yet heard anything on its other AFG grant request for a new pumper truck.

• Fall Haz-Mat Training Schedule Released

  Howard Rose of the Roane County Office of Emergency Services has released the Fall 2008 Haz-Mat training calendar. Classes run at various times throughout the fall starting September 9. For more information, see the WRCVFD Training Schedule.

• Roane County Favorite Recipes Cookbook Fundraiser - Recipes Needed, Deadline Extended

  Updated August 18, 2008: Roane County is getting a new cookbook. WRCVFD is conducting a Roane County Favorite Recipes Cookbook Fundraiser. West Roane Associate Members are busy gathering favorite recipes from Roane County residents and friends to include in the new cookbook, which will be published early this fall. The deadline for submitting recipes has been extended until september 15 to give more people a chance to have their recipes in the book.

  How to Submit Recipes for Publication in the Cookbook

  Individuals are encouraged to submit up to 5 recipes per person. You do not have to be a WRCVFD member! Any adult can submit a favorite recipe. Minors can submit recipes but only with their parents' or guardians' written permission.

  Submit favorite recipes as soon as possible to have them be considered for publication. Recipes can be mailed to the WRCVFD Cookbook Project at P.O. Box 417, Rockwood, TN 37854 or emailed to cookbook@westroane.com. Be sure to include your name and contact information in case we have any questions.

  More about This Cookbook Project

  A large part of the annual WRCVFD budget comes from donations so community support for the Cookbook Project is much appreciated. The community is always supportive of our fundraising activities and we are looking forward to providing our community with this cookbook, said Charlie Mead.

  Sponsors Sought

  West Roane is seeking sponsors to help defray printing costs. In addition, a limited number of donation pages are available to area businesses. Contact cookbook@westroane.com for more information.

  WRCVFD is depending on sponsoring donations and on the sale of cookbook donations pages to cover printing costs. Plans are that the cookbook fundraising project costs will be funded entirely by these donations.

• Free Radon Testing Kits Available

  Test your home for radon free. Contact the Knoxville Field Office for Tennessee Groundwater Protection, Mike Caudill, Supervisor or Shari Winburn, District Supervisor, at 3711 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921, phone (888) 891-8332.

• WRCVFD 2008 Fireworks Sale Brings in Over $3,600

  The WRCVFD 2008 Fireworks Sale concluded safely and successfully. Preliminary numbers are in: the West Roane volunteers took in $18,088.89 gross, which yielded $3,617.78 for WRCVFD.

  Free fireworks safety brochures were available at the sale. See also: Fireworks Safety.

  A large part of the annual WRCVFD budget comes from donations so community support for the Fireworks Sale was much appreciated. Many thanks are owed to the 44 volunteers assisted with publicity, setup, sales, and cleanup.

• Drought Level Increases to Severe

  The drought level in Roane County has been increased from moderate to severe. Please take extra care with outdoor fires and fireworks, and consider not burning outdoors until the drought is over. For more information on drought in Roane County and Tennessee, see: Drought Level Information".
